Hot Take: Mary Burgers Shares Her Preferences & Predictions

Mary Burgers practices the sustainable methods she preaches.

She is the creative director of Burgers Architecture, a West Vancouver studio at the forefront of sustainable, high-performance architecture. Here, she shares her preferences and predictions.

Design Motto: Collected, not faddish.

Key Influence In Your Work: Homes are the new wellness pods! The most pressing trend will be air purification. Our firm is focused on Passive House design that uses a high-tech HRV system to recirculate fresh air into a home and act as a bodyguard against asthma, allergies and airborne toxins.

Choose Any Room In The World To Redo: A historical home amongst olive trees overlooking the Aegean in Greece. I’d finish it with all-white, concrete, stone and natural linens. The connection of my family roots and that Mediterranean lifestyle would be a dream come true.

If You Could Only Buy One More Thing For Your House: An outdoor wood-burning hot tub to sit in by our creek.

Mood You Like To Create In A Home: Our architecture allows for lots of natural light and generous layouts, so people have room to curate their life.

Into: Pieces with history and tradition. In my living room, I have a Cité lounge chair by Jean Prouvé, which has been crafted since 1930.

Over: Fast-paced products lacking craftsmanship. Instead, we buy one great piece once a year. I like the idea of curating a story with meaningful items. (She gifted this Leonardo desk by Zanotta to her husband, architect Cedric Burgers, on his birthday.)

Current Inspiration: I’m collecting pieces from innovative studios like Lukas Peet in Vancouver and Os & Oos in the Netherlands.
