Color Spotlight: Auburn Is A Versatile Neutral That Exudes Quiet Luxury

A rusty brown with red undertones, auburn is a soulful fall color. “Auburn is a warm and inviting color that creates the perfect backdrop for a cozy space,” says H&H Editor Amanda Smith.
For a dramatic, cocooning effect, envelop an entry, bedroom or study in auburn walls, or paint out your kitchen cabinets. For just a touch of the rich hue, add textural accents that bring depth and dimension — think linen throw pillows, velvet seating or a glossy ceiling fixture. Auburn looks great in traditional, modern and country-style spaces. Complement the shade with grey-blues and natural woven elements, or combine auburn with classic charcoal and white for a contemporary feel. In the office of design firm Blanc Marine Intérieurs (pictured), the walls are drenched in auburn. The sophisticated shade enhances a vintage rug and accent table while setting off warm metal finishes in the lighting and framed art.
