5 Things You’ll Be Seeing More Of This Year

By Talia Hart On

Some decorating moves have stood the test of time while others come and go.

In 2023, we hearken back to traditional design. Scroll down for five things you’ll be seeing more of this year.

1. Architectural Preservation

The big selling factor for the homeowners of this Victorian house was the architectural details. It had good bones and still retained many of the original period features they were hoping for — think ornate plasterwork, stained glass windows and a grand foyer with its original staircase. “The goal was to preserve all of those charming details,” says designer Samantha Sacks.

2. Statement Wallpaper

While classic off-white walls never go out style, 2023 will see the return of color and pattern. Start small with an entryway or powder room. Here, designer Colette van den Thillart opted for patterned wallpaper with trompe-l’oeil circus stripes in the entrance of her client’s Rosedale home.

3. Bars

The return to entertaining has also sparked a return to home bars. From custom wet bars to bar carts, consider creating a designated zone where you can kick off happy hour in style.

4. Book-lined Rooms

While previous year’s may have seen an influx in open-concept homes, designers and architects will make a return to private rooms like libraries and dens. See some of the best book-lined spaces and libraries from the H&H archives here.

Many designers are helping their clients put the heritage back into their heritage homes. In the dining room of this circa 1880s home, design firm Tom Design Studio added architectural wall paneling and a mix of antique lighting to bring grace back to the space.
