If pink or blue feel too traditional (or you’re waiting to find out the sex of the baby), try creating a gender-neutral nursery instead! The term “unisex nurseries” went up 527 per cent in searches on Pinterest last year, and this timeless approach to design is still going strong. Fill the space with whimsical animal motifs and bright washes of color, or keep it simple with a neutral palette and breezy woven accents. Designer Alison Milne filled her daughter Oona’s bedroom will a mixture of vintage heirlooms, Scandinavian modern furniture and custom art for a youthful yet grown-up look.
In this global-inspired nursery, a tall giraffe seems to come alive, peeking its head over the crib. Antique brass fixtures add to the whimsical vintage theme, while recessed shelving offers extra storage.
“It was important to us that the nursery would work for either gender,” says Ashley Cassidy Seale, the founder of creative studio Ruby Social Co. “This room was originally my at-home office so we repurposed the existing white walls and added a coat of sky blue paint to create a focal point for the crib.”
Homeowner Haley Atkins hangs out with her two-year-old son, Jax, in his treehouse-like nursery. Whether it’s a fun saying (like “Dear World”) or a notice-me pattern, tying a piece of fabric on one side of a crib makes a statement — literally.
In this storybook nursery, both the crib and the wooden stool were passed down from the homeowners’ family. When paired with woodland motifs, like an owl pillow and whimsical wallpaper, the hand-me-downs have fresh new life.
Toronto prop and craft stylist Rayna Marlee created a neutral nursery for her son Benson Lief that is anything but boring. “The beach is my happy place, so I wanted to share this with Benson through the way I decorated it,” she says. Blond wood, whites and wovens create a serene sleep sanctuary.
A nursery doesn’t have to be swathed in color to feel youthful. Designer Montana Burnett added plenty of stuffed animals, rattan accessories and electric pink tassels for a hit of color to the homeowners’ daughter Mila’s nursery.
“My husband and I love travelling to the Pacific Northwest,” says designer Jordy Fagan of the nursery’s forest wall mural. “It’s something we look forward to doing with the twins when they’re older.”
You won’t believe this sweet space used to be a walk-in closet! The custom-designed whimsical animal wallpaper set the tone for the other colorful accents in the room.
H&H alum Jennifer Koper designed her baby nephew Zev’s nursery with color and pattern in mind. A multi-functional olive dresser stands the test of time, and playful texture, from the rug, felt mobile and upholstery, brings warmth and personality to the space.
