September is one of our favorite times to visit local farmers’ markets and find the best produce the season has to offer.

This salad is completely in season for September. Apple, celery and kale are all at their prime this month, while celery will start becoming abundant next month, so don’t wait too long to make this hearty salad. Cookbook author Devin Connell created this recipe as a twist on an apple and cheddar sandwich.

It’s such a good time of year for fresh fruit and vegetables, so why not throw as many of them as possible into one salad! That’s what Charlotte Langley has done with this dish featuring arugula, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, radishes and broccoli. Charlotte, the chef and owner of Scout Canning, also notes that you can make this your own by adding cheese, beans, grains — whatever you’re craving.
